What is a modem?
What is a modem: Provided by Internet Service Providers is a device that allows a connection to the Internet. It is a kind of “gateway” to the Internet: it converts an inbound Internet connection in a home into an Ethernet connection via a coaxial cable, telephone connection, or fiber optic that allows devices to access the Internet. Connected from home.
The first modems were in the late 1950s when IBM was the main provider. At the time, its purpose was to connect multiple military terminals scattered across various airbases (SAGE air defense system). A few years later in France, thanks to the development of new technologies, mini deals appeared, which all integrated into one modem.

How does the modem work?
The modem is a modulator and a demodulator. It converts (or converts) all digital data into analog waves, on the contrary, it can convert (reduce) analog waves back to digital data. In practice, the modem acts as a real translator. Internet service providers send data to a home modem via a telephone connection, fiber optic or coaxial cable (depending on the subscription).
The modem is responsible for converting this data into a digital signal, which is then transmitted over an Ethernet cable or WiFi to connect to the Internet at home connected devices. Do not confuse the router and modem: The router operates after the modem because it is responsible for distributing the Internet signal between all the devices connected at home (which ensures communication between them).
The transmission speed mod of the modem pays homage to Emile Pavot, a French engineer recognized for his work in the telecommunications industry.
Different types of modems
Modems are classified into three types. In fact, there are cable modems, DSL modems, and fiber modems. Fiber modems are still rare on the market, but they need to become more democratic by generalizing at very high speeds in French territory. It is important to have a suitable modem for your Internet connection, otherwise, you will not make maximum use of the speed provided by the line.
Today, most modems also function as WiFi routers. This is especially true of Internet boxes distributed by ISPs.
This does not mean that THEY BOTH ARE SAME. Like many computers, we focus on the process. In the past, a modem and router were used in parallel.
